    • Retention Hacks

This seems to be the no.1 thing new lash techs ask me, so I thought I'd spill the beans and list everything I do to gain superior retention for my clients here. Retention Hack 1 Hardly ever do I use primer. So many lash techs tell me they are taught to prime before lashing, and that's it. But rarely in my experience does that cut it, and for many clients with normal lashes, priming can actually make their retention worse. But more on that later! To ensure you are getting the absolute best bond you need to clean your clients lashes - and by this, I mean you need to cleanse them! Just as you do with your face, you need to apply an appropriate cleanser, get the lashes all sudsy, give them a brush down to ensure all dirt, makeup, oil and grime is gone, and then rinse off the shampoo, and dry with tissues. I'll put some links here so you know exactly what I use: 1. Remove makeup! As much as I instruct clients to come with makeup free eyes, I've got a few eyeliner lovers who need a quick wipe down prior to lashing. A couple of drops of oil free makeup cleanser on a lint free applicator sorts out the eyeliner without compromising the bond between the natural lash and extension. 2. Lash shampoo! I use the chrissanthie lash cleanser, which I dilute with distilled water that I buy from countdown and mix up daily in a 30ml foam bottle. The mousse created is rich and silky and I've had zero complaints from my clients about stinging eyes. I've used this myself as a makeup remover and it's absolutely great and not irritating. As a bonus it also is great for keeping blepharitis at bay, and the tea tree oil can act as a primer, removing the need to add additional chemicals to the eye area. 3. Scrub! I use both the lint free applicators and soft cleansing brushes to give the lashes a complete cleanse, brushing off any debris dirt and remaining makeup to ensure a completely clean canvas, perfect for lash application. These brushes are all disposable so a completely hygienic option. 4. Rinse! I fill up a rinsing bottle with distilled water and rinse off the shampoo, getting the client to tilt their head to one side whilst I hold tissues to the side of their face. It's very important you don't use tap water as the chemicals added to it can irritate your clients eyes and stick to the lashes, compromising the bond between the natural lash and extension. 5. If needed, you can prime, but as I stated above, I typically give this step a miss. The function of a primer is to strip off whatever could be on the natural lash, which is great if your client is makeup laden or has a very oily skin tone and you wish to be ultra certain that you have a clean canvas, but less great if your clients lashes are already clean. Primers are alcohol, and alcohols dehydrate the natural lash. The adhesives we use require moisture to cure, and if you've gone and removed all moisture from the natural lash, that adhesive is going to take even longer to cure, which can result in the lashes sticking together if you aren't babysitting each lash whilst it dries. Retention Hack 2 Give your clients lash shampoo. Honestly it makes a world of difference. If you give them a sample size package of chrissanthie, a cleansing brush and instructions on cleansing their lashes it will do the following; a - reinforce the fact that you care about the health of your clients lashes. This is paramount in this industry as we still are, completely, hopelessly, unregulated. People are doing botch jobs on every corner so you need to set yourself apart. b - make you look super legit. Don't tell your client to go wash their lashes with baby shampoo. Let say you walked into a hair salon and got your hair colour touched up, a conditioning treatment and a fabulous blow wave. You're looking glam, feeling fab, go up to pay and ask the stylist what products to use to maintain the look you just spent a fortune obtaining (!!) and they told you to get any old bottle of shampoo from the supermarket. This response would make you a bit skeptical of their abilities. You want the salon products to give you the salon results. Your clients are the same. c - increase their retention! This is a guarantee. If your client is applying makeup every day, working out, applying sunscreen (which is compulsory every day - yes you should be wearing it daily!) and just generally living life, gunk is going to accumulate in her lashes. You have increased the surface area of them by extending and thickening them so they are going to catch more gunk than before. This is going to wreck havoc on the adhesive if not removed, so you need to provided them with something to cleanse. d - give you another profit stream. Once they run out of the sample chrissanthie you can sell them a foaming bottle, or a bottle of concentrate. I have more foaming cleansers coming so you'll have more options soon! e - increase the likelihood of you being talked about - in a good way. I get told by clients all the time about their friends who have been lashed elsewhere and how poor the retention is. The only point of difference my clients know of between them and their friends is that they have instructions to cleanse their lashes - and their friends don't. They like to point out this difference to their friends who all seem to be baffled by the suggestion of shampooing their lashes. Of course the logic is sound - who wants dirty lashes? All you need to do is google blepharitis or lash mites and you'll be cleansing your lashes religiously - regardless of whether or not you have lash extensions! Retention Hack 3 Switch out your old school classic lashes to flats. My retention has shot through the roof since transitioning all clients to flat lashes. The logic behind flat lashes is indisputable - by taking a notch out of the upper and lower half of the extension, we have reduced the weight of the lash. This means we can apply a thicker diameter to our clients natural lash without the added weight. We are also increasing the bonding area of the extension to the natural lash, as the flat lash hugs the natural lash. I stock three different types of flat lashes - my ultimate favourite are the ultrasoft split lashes (which are arriving in single length trays shortly) as they combine the thickness of a classic lash with a volume finish, as the tips are split, resembling a Russian volume fan. They are also, as the name suggests, ridiculously soft, meaning your clients will find them completely weightless to wear, and therefore the most comfortable eyelash extension experience ever. I adore stroking these lashes when I wear them on myself as they literally feel like silk. If you are wanting a more defined finish, I also stock the diamond edition and feather luxe lashes, which have a less of a split tip, and more of a defined finish. Retention Hack 4 Refresh your adhesive every 15 minutes max. The second the consistency changes, use a new drop. Do not put the new drop on the old drop, you will ruin the new adhesive. Live by this rule, especially with winter coming up. Retention Hack 5 Work with the humidity and temperature within your room. Different adhesives respond better to different humidity and temperate levels. I use lady black as it tends to be more tolerant and I am not tolerate whatsoever so one of us had to give and it wasn't going to be me, so lady black is my go to. Whatever adhesive you use, be aware of it's optimum operating conditions and adjust to suit it - whether you do this by running a humidifier/dehumidifier or just working faster. Retention Hack 6 Lash serum. Honestly, it may seem counter productive to suggest a serum to lash extension addicts but I swear, those who use a serum experience superior retention and have healthier lashes = better extensions and therefore superior lashing results. Most serums typically work by holding the natural lash in it's telogen phase longer, meaning you have more full grown adult lashes to extension, and they will be hanging around for a decent amount of time. Yay for no more fuzzy baby lashes! Retention Hack 7 This is less of a hack and more of a helpful suggestion - get your clients to pre book. Many of my clients find themselves picking their lashes if they go too long between fills - which of course is terrible for their lashes and worse for me because it makes my job that much harder. Getting them to book before they leave ensures they know exactly when they are seeing you again, and are motivated to keep their investment looking good, and their fingers off their beautiful lashes!

    • Lash Application Consent Form

Prior to the application of eyelash extensions, it is essential that the client fill out a consent form, granting the lash tech permission to perform the treatment. By doing so, it establishes clear guidelines as to what the client can expect from the procedure, and informs the technician of any sensitivities the client may have to the products used. This blog post aims to cover everything that should be included in an eyelash extension application consent form, and details the reasoning behind asking these questions. If a client has ever reacted to a plaster before it is possible that they will be sensitive to gel pads used to secure the lower lashes, and very likely that any medical tape used may cause an irritation. It is best to use a pair of silicone pads on these clients, which have no tack and will not cause a reaction. It is safe practise to have a doctor grant your client permission for lash extensions to be applied if the client has had an eye injury or illness recently. It is best to have a note signed by the doctor given to the technician to allow them the peace of mind that they will not cause damage by applying lash extensions to the client. The adhesives used can be drying to the eye, and if the eye has experienced trauma, reducing moisture levels can cause discomfort to the client. Lash extensions cannot be applied to people who have experienced a reaction to surgical glues or nail glues in the past - lash extension adhesives are made from cyanoacrylate, the same product used to create medical adhesives and nail glues. A reaction to either of these is almost a guarantee that the client will react to lash extension adhesive. Watery eyes, dry eyes, itchy eyes and eye rubbing are all symptoms of seasonal allergies and all affect lash extensions. Eyes that water throughout the application can cause the lash extensions to fall out prematurely, whereas clients who suffer from dry eyes may find this exasperated by lash application. Itchy eyes are typically caused by pollen getting caught in the lashes, and the problem can be magnified if the client does not wash their lashes once having extensions applied. This can result in eye rubbing, which can break the bonds of the extensions and cause premature loss. It is essential that the client understand the importance of good eye hygiene whilst wearing lash extensions and cleanse their lashes daily, regardless of whether they suffer allergies or not. A range of aftercare products can be found on the Designer Aftercare page. Maintaining eye health is vital in day to day life, and even more so when wearing eyelash extensions. Blepharitis suffers may find their symptoms are exaggerated with lash extensions, and it is best for sufferers to remain extension free until the condition clears. Lash extension wearers, and sufferers of Blepharitis should use Chrissanthie eye cleanser to keep their eyes clean and healthy. Some lash adhesives can contain latex. The idea behind adding this ingredient is to allow the adhesive to be flexible, and improve retention. Some clients are allergic however, so it is best to be aware of whether your adhesive contains this ingredient. Both Lady Black and Sky S+ sold in the Designer Store are latex free and formaldehyde free. Previous application of extensions is an area I like to highlight, as it gives an opportunity to discuss with the client the previous application by the past lash tech. Were they happy with the lashes, what would they change, did they know what was applied and what products used? This gives a guide as to what the clients' expectations are, and allows the tech to determine what style the client wishes to have applied. It is not uncommon for stress or hormone imbalance to cause hair, lashes, and brows to fall out. Persons suffering from such issues are not good candidates for lash extensions as the lashes will shed prematurely, and not last the typical duration of a lash cycle. Illnesses and injuries can effect the immune system and the body in a compromised state. It is not wise to apply any chemicals or potential allergens onto a person who has suffered an illness or injury, as they are at a higher risk of developing an allergy to the products used. When pregnant, the body experiences increased sensitivities. As a result, it is possible that pregnancy can increase the likelihood of a client developing an allergy to the products used in lash extension application. Should an allergy occur, the client is limited in medications doctors may prescribe to counter the allergy due to the risk these medications may pose to the baby. However, once the extensions are removed the allergy will subside. Should a reaction occur it will in no way affect the baby. During the pregnancy, some women have excellent retention, and find their lashes look better than ever. Others suffer from a shorter lash cycle, and find their hair falls out a lot quicker than normal. Once the child is born many women find that they have a sudden shedding of hair - and can find their lashes fall out quickly once the child is born. It is important that the client understands that how the pregnancy effects their hair cycle is unpredictable and it may be best to wait until the child is born before having lashes applied if they do not wish to have more frequent infills. Anyone suffering from a condition that causes premature hair loss is unlikely to be a good candidate for lash extensions. Extensions can be applied only to natural lashes. These clients should be accessed on a case by case basis and application should be done only with the approval of a doctor. Clients who are taking medications prescribed for hair loss may have issues with retention. They should be made aware prior to application that they may need more regular infills due to a shorter lash cycle and extra care must be taken in application to ensure the extensions are suitable for the natural lash. Deficiencies causing lash loss mean the client has a shorter lash cycle and will need infills frequently. They are likely to benefit more from a lash serum and by taking biotin. Trichotillomania sufferers are not good candidates for lash extensions. The extensions may motivate them to not pull out their lashes but it must be clearly explained prior to application that the technician is not responsible for lash damage caused by the client pulling out the extended lashes. Recent illness means a compromised immune system. It is best to wait a few weeks for the immune system to repair itself prior to applying lash extensions to reduce the likelihood of the client suffering an allergic reaction. Not everyone is comfortable with having photos taken of them, and in order for photos to be used the client must give permission. Photos will not be published without the express permission given by the client. Lash technicians are not doctors and are unable to diagnose or treat any issues arising from the application of lash extensions. If the client suspects they are having a reaction to having the lash extensions applied it is strongly recommended they see a doctor. With the permission of the doctor, the removal of the extensions can be performed. The likelihood of a reaction occurring is less than 2%, and can occur at any time, but it is vital that the client be aware of this risk. They should also be made aware that the body can tag any product as a histamine at any time and this is not exclusive to the products used to apply lash extensions. Anyone can become allergic at any time to any beauty product or ingredient, and this extends into foods, and other areas as well. Changes in eating habits, stress, and other factors can trigger allergies, and is not lash extension specific. As a result, the lash technician is not accountable for any reaction suffered. The service was performed and all risks were acknowledged by the client and accepted as a possibility, so no refunds will be given. Some clients may find that eyelash extensions are not suitable for them and the change from their natural lashes be too dramatic and request the removal of the extensions. If an alteration can be done it will be performed in a complimentary 30 minute touch up. Lash extension application involves using a medical grade adhesive to bond synthetic extensions to the natural lash. The eyes must remain closed to avoid irritation, and in rare cases can cause issues to arise. Any sensitivities felt during the application are likely able to be remedied and should be brought to the attention of the lash tech as they occur. Eyelash extension application is an art and careful maintenance is required to ensure the extensions last the duration of the lash cycle. The extensions are applied to natural lashes approximately 2mm from your lash line, and each lash is isolated to ensure it does not prohibit the growth of neighbouring lashes. Each natural lash has its own individual growth rate, and will shed once it has reached the end of its life cycle. This lash will then be replaced by a new lash, which is why infills are required to maintain a full, lush lash line. In order for all clients to maintain gorgeous lashes, it is essential that the lash tech remains in good health. If there is any change the client is sick it is appreciated that the client refrain cancel their appointment, to allow the tech to remain well, and therefore not compromise the appointments of other clients. Self employed lash techs do not get to take paid sick leave, and if sick, faces the choice of working whilst ill and risking the health of their clients, or taking unpaid leave and being unable to pay bills. Last minute cancellations and no shows result in wasted time and disappointed clients who would have happily booked that appointment had they known it was available. Reminders are sent out two days prior to allow ample time for the client to give notice if they are unable to make their appointment. Designer Lashes charges by time for infills. If a client has less than 40% remaining extensions when they come in for a fill, they will not leave with the same level of coverage initially achieved in the application of a full set. It is essential that the lashes be maintained to ensure durability, and allow for ample time for infills. Eye makeup needs to be removed prior to application of extensions and many makeup products leave residue unable to be seen by the eye. This residue can prohibit the bonding of the extensions and cause premature lash loss. By signing and dating the agreement the client acknowledges the risks and is happy to proceed with the application. If changes to the clients medical history arise it must be made known prior to the next application of lash extensions. Any questions can be asked prior to the application, or requests for certain lash styles can be made.

    • Henna Hacks!

Over the last 6 months, henna has blown up. Not only does henna tint the brow hairs, it also tints the skin, the stubborn greys, the downy blondes, and perfectly covers tattoos! This results in the most magnificent power brow you could ever dream of giving your client. This product is also 99% natural, and only requires the addition of water to create the perfect consistency. Each bottle has hundreds of uses, so you'll buy one bottle and it will last months, if not years. No more chemicals, developers, or horrible smelling lotions, and a significantly reduced risk or reacting! Henna conditions the hair, so helps to grow back over plucked brows, and can colour the skin, motivating your client not to pluck out new growth. So how exactly does this incredible product work?! Henna is mixed in a container with 3-5 drops of distilled water (not tap to ensure you're not adding unknown chemicals to the mix) with your Brow Henna at a ratio of 2:1 Mix thoroughly, and add a couple of additional drops of water if required to gain a consistency of soy sauce - the thinner the better, to ensure complete saturation of the skin. Allow this mix to stand for one minute, then paint onto your clients prepped brows. To prep the brows, I personally use a mixture of diluted chrissanthie and scrub with a lint free brush so the brows are free of any makeup. Then I wipe them with a priming pad to dehydrate the hair, so when the henna is applied it sucks up as much as possible. I apply the henna with a lint free brush, and draw on hair strokes at the beginning of the brow with hair stroke brushes, and create a sharp tail with a henna brush. Unsure what colour to use on your client? Check out this guide! No 1 Neutral Brown is suitable for dark-blond or light brown hair. In addition, this colour is perfectly suited for colouring very thin, plucked eyebrows. No 2 Cold Coffee is suitable for women with very white, alabaster skin and women with brown eyes. When mixed with No 3 Rich Brown it gives a rich colour similar to bitter chocolate, softening the olive tone of the skin. No 3 Rich Brown is suitable for bright brunettes. When mixed with No 2 Cold, it is suitable for very light, almost transparent skin. No 4 Bitter Chocolate works well for brown-haired women and dark-haired women. It is indispensable for creating the image of a femme fatale. No 5 Frosty Chestnut is the brightest shade in the whole line. It works very well for women with dark hair and cold skin. In order to adjust the colour saturation, one can simply vary the product’s consistency and number of layers applied. No 1 Pearl works well for blondes with very white, almost transparent skin. It gives a very gentle result that is as natural as possible. We recommended adding a bit of graphite concentrate to avoid an undesirable warm tint with yellowness. No 2 Light Brown is for women with olive skin tone, as it softens the coldness of the skin. It is also recommended for women with Slavic skin types. When mixed with No 3 Light Chestnut it turns into a beautiful muscat colour. No 3 Light Chestnut is one of the most popular shades for blondes with honey, golden and apricot hair tones. Also recommended to women with bright red hair. No 4 Golden Blonde is a very soft, gentle colour. It is suitable for blonde women. When used for colouring, it gives a warm look that is as natural as possible. It gives volume and density even to naturally thin eyebrows. No 5 Dark Blond suits ashen blonde and dark-blond women, as well as women with a Slavic or European appearance. It gives as natural a look as possible. Black essence BH Brow Henna is used for darkening the colour. Just a few grains are necessary for a saturated colour. Auburn essence BH Brow Henna is used for lightening the colour. It gives a shade of warmth, smoothly softening the colour.
